Commodores transformed into a bathhouse, built and led by Aboriginal youth. Tyres scream, hot metal dripping; wrecked cars breathe heat into visions of care and transformation. We bathe, torn open, soft, with Country. On unceded Mumirimina Country, a car graveyard is reimagined as a public bathhouse. Falcons and Commodores, once icons of speed and combustion, become saunas, steam pools, and hot rooms.
This is a youth-led and built space; engines to water, metal to breath, wreckage to ritual. Step inside, and you are held by a ceremony led by First Nations youth, artists, Country and community.---Developed over 8 months, artist Benjamin Paul, together with a team of First Nation facilitators, has worked with 28 First Nations students at Montrose Bay High to transform car wrecks into functional bathing structures, saunas, spas and steam rooms. In partnership with Karadi Aboriginal Corporation, students have explored stories of palawa culture and Country through the theme of water as a cleansing force, a connector, and a carrier of knowledge. Together, they’ve imagined futures beyond fossil fuels, designing new spaces and practices that center care, cultural strength, and respect for Country

Benjamin Paul is a participatory artist, and industrial designer working at the intersection of public art, material reuse, and communal ceremony. His practice centres on transforming salvaged materials and shared labour into spaces for care, cultural reconnection, and speculative repair.
Grounded in a background in Industrial Design, Ben creates tactile, collaborative experiences, turning wrecked cars into hot pools, old systems into new rituals, and group processes into public architecture. His major work The Future of Toys has toured widely across Australia, involving over 250 participants and 18 collaborators to explore imagination, agency, and repair after disaster. Internationally, Ben has developed experimental bathing festivals at Floating University Berlin, prototyped inflatable architecture with Popticum Berlin, and co-designed sustainable infrastructure in Indonesia and Fiji. In 2023, he presented works at the Inflatable Architecture Festival (Berlin) and Die Stadt als Leere Kulisse Artist Lab (Halle, Germany).

Bathing in its numerous forms has cultural origins in many cultures across the world. As we come into intimacy with water and heat, our nervous systems relax, we shed layers of tension, drop into new forms of awareness, of each other, and the place around us.
As a settler I see an opportunity to explore how these psycho-physical experiences of bathing could be used to cultivate a collective tenderness and openness to deconstruct colonial patterns of thinking and relating to the land.
The experimental aspects of the work are both in the materiality of the infrastructure and the emergent co-creation of contemporary rituals of relaxation, collective care and attunement to place.
Guiding Questions:
How might a forum of convivial and embodied group experiences allow for the unsettling of colonial place relations?
How might we reconfigure settler place relations to support new reciprocal and custodial exchange?
What temporary bathing infrastructures might support the emergence of these conversations?
What is the relevance of the research outcomes to the wider community?

Often, these toys are given to us. Sometimes we like them, sometimes we really like them. We might sleep with them, talk to them or throw them around, but usually we grow out of them. What happens then? People in Australia produce over 1 tonne of waste per person per year (that's around the weight of a small car). The Future of Toys explores ways we can turn our old toys into new things. Reflecting on our lives, our communities and our futures, we design a new invention that responds to what we need today.Through this work, we think about the waste our communities are producing, and learn ways of being resourceful by turning this waste into valuable resources. We think about what human skills and qualities might make the world around us a better place, and invent something that brings this into reality. With the help of artists and designers, young participants use emerging recycling technologies and design methodologies to bring to life their ideas. Through this work we hope to support young people to feel a sense of agency when facing their futures.

In development
Power Trip askes young people to explore the concept of power and reflect on how it shapes their lives and the world around us. Systems of governance are failing to represent the hopes and dreams of the next generation, leaving those with little power or influence in decision-making processes to bear the brunt of environmental collapse. The consequences of inaction shape our narratives of the future. This work is an experiment in understanding what might happen if the power dynamic is flipped.
Working from this field of investigation, participants aged 7-12y.o. gather in a series of workshops to disrupt the power dynamic and explore the implications of Artificial Intelligence on our future. Using emerging technologies of ‘Deepfake AI’ each participant impersonates a person in power. A speech addressing the world through the eyes and mouths of those who hold the privilege of influence.
